Protection orders for domestic violence are handled at the Family Law Self-Help Center, 601 N. Pecos Rd, Las Vegas. Call 702-455-1500 and press 2. The center is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm.

You do not pay anything up front to apply (NRS 33.050).

The deadlines that matter

An emergency order expires when the court says, but no later than 7 calendar days after the verified application was filed (NRS 33.575).

The court must hold a hearing no later than the day the emergency order expires. At that hearing it decides whether to issue an extended order or dismiss the application (NRS 33.575).

If the court declines to issue an emergency order, it must schedule a hearing within 7 calendar days of the filing. That hearing decides whether to issue an extended order or dismiss the application (NRS 33.575).

If the other person has not yet been served, the court can extend an emergency order by up to 7 days. Law enforcement serves the notice of that extension (NRS 33.575).

An extended order can last up to 1 year, as the court fixes (NRS 33.575).

Steps to get one

1. Call 702-455-1500 and press 2 to reach the protection order desk at the Family Law Self-Help Center. Staff give free help with forms but cannot give legal advice.

2. Fill out the verified application. A verified application is one you sign under oath. The emergency order process starts when it is filed (NRS 33.575).

3. If you cannot afford court fees, ask for a fee waiver. The court must let you file for free if you get public assistance or your household's net income is at or under 150% of the federal poverty guideline (NRS 12.015).

4. Go to the hearing. Bring your copy of the order and keep it with you once it is issued.

Other situations

If you need a safe place to stay, SafeNest runs a 24/7 hotline at 702-646-4981, and S.A.F.E. House answers at 702-564-3227. Both run confidential shelters.

If you have an order from another state, territory or tribe, Nevada courts must enforce it as if a Nevada court issued it, even if it was never registered here. This applies when the issuing court had jurisdiction and the other person had reasonable notice and a chance to be heard (NRS 33.085).

Police must enforce an out-of-state order that shows the names of the parties, shows it has not expired, and carries a certified copy, a file stamp or a court signature or stamp (NRS 33.085).

An employer can ask for a protection order against harassment in the workplace. A temporary one expires no later than 15 days after it is issued, unless it is extended (NRS 33.270).
