Tow Bill Checker

Nevada doesn't cap what a tow company can charge in the regulations — the dollar figure is in each company's own filed tariff. What the regulations do fix are the rules that win an argument at the counter: when a charge is flat-rate only, when storage has to be free, and the five situations where every dollar comes back. Answer the questions, enter what you were billed, and this checks it against those rules.

1 · What kind of tow was this

2 · Private-property tow rules (Category C only)

NAC 706.418: for a Category C tow, if any one of these five is true, every charge on the bill has to be refunded — not just the disputed line.

Was the tow requested by the actual owner of the property, or their authorized agent?
Were tow-away / no-parking signs posted on the property?
If this was a paid parking lot: was your car towed less than 24 hours after your paid time ran out, or was there no attendant or pay machine when you parked (or a machine that gave no ticket or time-stamped slip)?
Was local law enforcement notified of the tow, within 90 minutes of the tow starting (or 30 minutes of it reaching the yard)?
Did an officer at the scene tell the tow operator to stop, and they towed it anyway?

3 · Drive-off, storage and payment

Did you (or the owner's agent) reach the vehicle before it was hooked up and towed?
Did you reach the storage yard before the vehicle was placed into storage?
Was the vehicle released to you within 24 hours of being towed?
Has the vehicle been in storage more than 15 days (more than 21 days if police had it towed after a crash)?
Were you charged a fee just to visit the stored vehicle the first time, or to pick it up?
Were you offered the option to pay by card (credit, debit, cash, money order or electronic transfer)?

4 · Enter what you were billed

Add every line from your bill. For a private-property (Category C) tow, the tow charge itself must be one flat line — if it's broken out by the hour, the mile (before mile 11), or the equipment used, that's a flag.

5 · What's on the bill itself

NAC 706.420(1): a nonconsensual tow bill must carry every one of these. Check off what's printed on yours. Some items are only required in certain cases, and the checker accounts for that.

This checks your bill against the Nevada Transportation Authority's towing regulations (NAC 706.406–706.424) and the related Nevada Revised Statutes, read off the law directly. It can't check the dollar amount itself — the rate is set in each company's own tariff, which by law must be kept in the tow truck and at the tow company's office where tow requests are taken, for you to inspect (NAC 706.412). It is not legal advice. To dispute a charge or file a complaint, contact the Nevada Transportation Authority or the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada.
