You can apply for Medicaid online through Access Nevada at any time, with no enrollment window, so apply as soon as your income drops.

You apply for Nevada Medicaid online through Access Nevada, which is run by the Division of Social Services (DSS, formerly DWSS). There is no enrollment window, so you can apply any time. Apply the same day you decide to.

Before you start

Use Access Nevada, not Nevada Health Link. Nevada Health Link is for private health plans. It is for people over the Medicaid income line, and it is not where you apply for Medicaid.

Medicaid itself is run by the Nevada Health Authority, but the application goes through Access Nevada.

Step by step

1. Go to Access Nevada, the online application run by the Division of Social Services. It takes both Medicaid and SNAP (food stamps) applications.

2. Apply as soon as your income drops, for example after losing a job. Medicaid has no enrollment window, so there is no deadline to wait for or miss.

3. Check the income line first. Under Medicaid expansion (42 U.S.C. 1396a(a)(10)(A)(i)(VIII)), the monthly limit is 138% of the federal poverty level. That is $1,836 for a household of 1, $2,489 for 2, $3,142 for 3 and $3,795 for 4. Add $653 for each additional person.

4. Gather your proof while you fill out the form. That means pay stubs or a layoff letter, a rent or mortgage statement, utility bills, child care receipts, and ID for each person applying.

5. Sign and submit. Keep a copy of the signed first page, because its date is your filing date.

If you also need food help

Medicaid and SNAP are separate applications with separate forms, but you can do both in the same sitting. They share most of the same income paperwork. Before you submit, list every monthly cost you pay, such as rent, utilities, child care and child support. Put the proof for each next to it.

For SNAP, the date you apply decides how much of the first month you get. If you need food today while an application is pending, call 211.

Children, pregnancy and parents

The income lines above are for Medicaid expansion. For the limits for children, pregnancy and parents, check with the state when you apply, or call 211.
